British-Japanese pianist Karen Shiraishi leads a duo for Snug's Happy Hour set at 4:30 pm, keeping things melodic, harmonically rich, and firmly swinging. Her writing shows a clear voice, and in a lean format she lets touch, time, and dialogue do the talking. She has fit easily alongside New Orleans rhythm sections, which shows in the way she rides a groove without crowding it. An elegant open to the night.

Arecipient of the Chamber Music America Performance Plus grant, Shiraishis debutalbum featuring Herlin Riley, Max Moran, Andrew Baham and Julian Lee, is set to bereleased in 2026. Already having developed a self-assured, recognisable voice as acomposer and improviser, her music is melodically driven, harmonically rich, andimbued with swing. She has gained attention in the traditional music scene,appearing with Shannon Powell, Kermit Ruffins, Stephen Walker and thePreservation Hall All-Stars.
